  • Because we are rural and the attraction for the candidate is usually our outdoor activities, we try to take the candidate to some of the amazing natural attractions in the area.

We’re a very small clinic so we only schedule one day in the clinic.

I find little gems that when I ask “Did you have another career goal before your pursuit of being a medical provider? Why did you change to this goal?”

Always the answers you never know until they are onboard and working.

Do you use social media to recruit providers or only non-provider staff?

We aren’t using any HR Metrics that contain a recruitment budget. We do use a home grown HR metric system.

We are reaching out to several employment organizations in Redding, a much larger community with a good healthcare base. So far everyone is more than happy to work with us. I just have to make time on my calendar to keep these relationships alive.

Because we are so small our team involves all of Admin. Is that good? Sometimes. The challenge is getting people to set aside their own wants and think of the good of the organization.

Hello everyone. My name is Denise Highfill. I’m the HR/Compliance Officer for Shingletown Medical Center. We are located in Shasta County at the base of Mt. Lassen. I’ve been with SMC for a year. Prior to this I was the COO at Cares Community Health in Sacramento, CA, worked for the California Primary Care Association and before that with Shasta Community Health Center in Redding, CA. Yes, I have been in the FQHC world for more years than I’d like to count. I love our FQHC mission, our dedicated staff and the challenges that come from working for a non-profit.

I’m proud to be able to recruit for a small, rural health center. It is gratifying when we score wonderful staff who are willing to drive to the mountains to care for the community. You must be mission driven. A dedicated HR/Compliance Officer is a new (just one year) position for our organization so there adjustments to be made by all staff but we’re getting there.

Does your organization have any kind of a 401k/403b match?
